Sister
Being ten years younger than Eric my first memories of him were in the 1930s when he was either at Cambridge or walking in the Lake District or Spain with his elder brother. If he was at home he was usually studying in his bedroom or playing a game of tennis. During the war years, in spite of active service and his wife and daughter in Denmark, Eric still found time to write me letters. At this time I was at college and Eric's letters were encouraging me to work hard (typical school master!). The nearest I got to learning French was a game of French cricket in the garden with him.
After the war we had many family occasions when those with skills would entertain us all, with Eric leading the singing and instructing the assembled company what part they would take in the entertainment. The musical gene also passed me by, however I nearly ruined my sewing machine making a tent for him, a skill he did not have!
In spite of Eric’s efforts I still can't speak French but I am qualified to teach English!
